What is mobile phone number portability?

Mobile phone number portability (MNP) allows you to keep your existing mobile number when switching to another mobile phone network. It provides you with the freedom to switch to another provider if you are unhappy with your exisiting network without the fear of losing your number.

Can I keep my existing mobile number if I decide to move to another network?

Yes, you can use your existing number with a new network.  This is done by ‘porting' your mobile phone number and the new provider will need to port your mobile number from your current service provider before you cancel your contract with them.

If you would like to change networks just follow these simple steps below:

1) Complete your existing contract term, or buy yourself out by contacting your service provider and paying the remaining line rental due to the end of the contract period.  Check with your existing service provider if you are unsure of your contractual terms.

2) Choose the deal that best suits your usage requirements and order online.  Please note - that many of the best mobile phone deals are only available exclusively online.  To ensure you get the best deals visit Vodafone online before you buy.  Inform your new provider that you wish to keep your existing mobile phone number. Your new provider will then contact your exisiting network and ask them to port your number on your behalf - so there is no need for you to do anything but wait.

3) The process can vary depending on whether you require a new SIM or handset from your new provider. Please ask your new provider for information on how long it will take to port your mobile phone number.

You cannot 'port' your number if you have chosen a new phone on your same network. Your current service provider will provide you with an upgrade.

You cannot 'port' your number if you have not completed your minimum contract term with your existing supplier.  Check your existing terms and conditions with your current service provider to establish when you can change networks.

*An important point to bear in mind is that you should not cancel your contract with your existing service provider until they have ported, free of charge, your mobile phone number to your new service provider.  If you cancel your contract with your exisiting service provider before you have ported your number you may be charged you a connection fee from your new provider. Additionally, you will also be without a mobile phone service until you are connected to your new provider.
